Movistar and O2 roaming: price change in 2021.

13 January, 2021

In June 2017, roaming disappeared within the European Union. This allows us to use our call and data rates in any EU member state as if we were in our country of residence. Despite this, roaming (especially data roaming) has certain limitations.

Roaming limitations.

For example, one of the limitations that affect the data side is that we cannot use 100% of the data included in our tariff abroad. Data rates have been decreasing over time due to a wider choice and improved technologies. In this sense, Movistar and O2 have updated the conditions of their roaming rates.

Movistar and O2 roaming: price change in 2021.

Prices established by the EU.

The European Union has been progressively setting prices per GB since 2017 when they set prices at a maximum of 7.7 Euro per gigabyte. After that, they moved to 6 Euro per GB on 1 January 2018, 4.5 Euro per GB on 1 January 2019, 3.5 Euro per GB on 1 January 2020, and finally to 3 Euro per GB on 1 January 2021, all prices excluding VAT.

The legal conditions of Movistar unlimited data roaming rates read as follows:

‘The rate has an allowance of 50 GB/month in the case of Roaming within the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and the UK. Once the 50 GB limit is exceeded, the price per MB will be €0.0035/MB (VAT included)’.

The main change for this year concerning Movistar roaming rates consists in the case of exceeding the 50 GB franchise and the price per additional mega:

  • Until 31 December 2020, the price was €0.0041/MB (VAT included).
  • From 1 January 2021, the price is €0.35/MB.

In short, since 1 January of this year, the price per additional megabyte has dropped by 7 cents.
