Telefónica, Brazil and 5G DSS.

Vivo, that is, Telefónica Brazil, has recently activated 5G DSS mobile signal in eight cities of Brazil, and is waiting for the concession auction to operate 5G expected for next year.

5G DSS service.

Vivo’s 5G DSS service is a type of technology transitioning from the fourth to the fifth mobile generation that has been recently installed. This service will be offered in different neighbourhoods of the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Goiânia, Curitiba and Porto Alegre.

According to Vivo’s information, this technology allows sharing, dynamically, the spectrum that 3G and 4G don’t use to provide 5G service. However, since the spectrum does not have a continuous and dedicated band, the 5G experience will not be total.

The Brazilian Government.

Fabio Faria, the Brazilian Minister for Communications, has already talked with representatives of Ericsson and Nokia and will meet with representatives of the Chinese’s giant Huawei, which is involved in different controversies in the USA and Europe.

Since he took office, the Minister has always kept an open posture to dialogue with the main manufacturers of telecom equipment and infrastructure in Brazil.

Frequency auction.

The frequency auction will take place in 2021, and President Bolsonaro will be responsible for the decision. The auction will grant rights over four different radio frequency bands (700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz).

5G in Latin America.

China is very interested in introducing its 5G network into Latin America. In the case of Brazil, it is a market of 210 million of inhabitants, so the auction is one of the largest auctions of this industry in the world.

In the case of Argentina, they have already carried out three real environmental tests with Telecom Personal and they plan to do the same with Claro and Telefónica.
