26 January, 2021

According to data published by the Spanish National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), the portability of fixed and mobile telephony remained at all-time highs in October 2020, with almost one million changes carried out.

Portability trends.

Although the record in mobile portability was already beat in October 2019, in September 2020 the total amount of fixed and mobile telephony portability cases almost exceeded one million changes for the first time, moving beyond the halt suffered by mobile portability during the spring as a result of Covid-19.

  • Mobile portability figures.

758,476 mobile numbers switched operator in October 2020, a record number, surpassing by 1.3% the peak recorded in September 2020 and by 6.3% that of the same month in 2019.

  • Fixed portability figures.

Regarding fixed telephony, in October 2020, 230,086 subscribers switched operator, which means an increase of 6.4% compared to the same month in 2020. However, it involves 9.3% fewer portability cases than those recorded in September.

Portability by operators.

According to the data, the mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and MásMóvil Group are the ones who have gained mobile lines. In contrast, Vodafone, Movistar and Orange, which account for 76.1% of the total number of mobile lines in the market, have lost lines, exporting more lines than they received.

With regard to landlines, the three leading operators, Movistar, Orange and Vodafone, still account for 83% of lines, followed by MásMóvil with 11.66% and the rest of the operators accounting for a 5.34%.

Increase in M2M lines.

The CNMC also reported that machine-to-machine (M2M) lines reached 7.55 million, which implies an increase of almost 15% compared to last year.
